Making a Summer Sewing Project Your Own

Our summer sewing sessions have started at Sew Much Fun Studios and we have terrific projects in mind. Classes are one and a half hours for four days in a row.  On day one our students learn all about the sewing machine, how to hand stitch, how to pin a pattern and how to use an iron. Our first project is a drawstring bag. Students get to choose their fabric and ribbon for the drawstring.  Our second project is an apron with pockets.  We use 2 fabrics for this pattern and ribbon for the ties. Students learn how to “pivot” when sewing the apron corners. On day 3 we have more choices of projects now that the students have some sewing experience.  The students get so excited trying to choose their next project and what fabric to pick. We also have lots of embellishers such as rhinestones, buttons, felt and ribbon.

The best thing about sewing is creating a unique and one of a kind project. Fabric, thread, buttons and ribbon all come together through sewing.  One way to make a project more personalized is by using appliqués. You can appliqué your initials, or a favorite flower, or a familiar symbol, or even the image of your pet. Once you come up with an idea, simply draw it on paper , cut it out and pin it in place on your project. Choose a fun and colorful fabric for the best contrast.  You can use fusible tape and an iron to heat set the appliqué in place.  Choose a coordinating color thread and set your sewing machine on the zig zag stitch. Stitch around all the edge being sure to stay on the appliqué fabric.  Now you can finish your project, whether it be a pillow, pocketbook or wallhanging with an added personal touch!
